Kyosho DRX VE?

Recommended Posts

Hello, im thinking about getting into rally cars and I have seen a Kyosho DRX VE on modelsport and I was wondering if they are any good? I know this the hpi wr8 is very popular but very over priced if you ask me.

I have watched jangs review and it seems good but I wanted to see what you guys think about it.

I also have a few question...

  • Would the HPI wr8 shell fit the DRX VE?
  • Would the HPI WR8 wheels and tires in the DRX VE

thanks alex

Hey, can't help a huge amount but I've got a DMT VE. The same but in MT form and it's a little on the soft side... Which is good sometimes but not so good at others. Didnt take much to bend dog bones and pop them out etc...

The DRX VE is a fantastic car I have two of them now lol, it handles like a dream and is amazing to drive on 2s it's great fun and on 3s it's very good, it has a few little things that can be improved on to reduce shell damage and help protect it from crap but every car needs a little tweaking, I'd highly recommend the car but you are a little limited on body shells and they are not cheap, if you want another option the Tamiya XV-01 is also a great bet with a large choice in body shells and hop ups

That's the one thing I find annoying with the larger scale rally cars.

I wish the manufacturers would decide on one set of chassis dimensions so everyone could have some choice on body shells.

The drx ve is a superb rc, plain and simple, ive had both the wr8 and drx and to be honest i think the drx is a better car out the box, the handling box stock is just sublime on tarmack, it drifts and slides very very easily and its very controlable in a slide, the wr8 is quicker yes but the drx has more torque, body wise only drx bodies will fit a drx chassis, but at least theres more choice than just fiesta's like the wr8, wheels wise you can use the 17mm hex conversions off the dbx and then any 1/8 buggy wheels/tyres will fit, i had a subaru drx running kyosho inferno wheels/tyres :-) gives a little more top end to :-) i found the drx on 2s to be a little slow but on 3s it really livens up and it was just about perfect, i love the drx its a fantastic car, i seriously dout you will regret it, another one to consider is the carisma959 if your after a good, budget rally rc.

OK Here we go... Box stock ve cars on 3s first run. Lots of fun. Loads of rocks caught in the fiesta but none in the Subaru... Bit weird. Fiesta ran better out of box, it seemed like the scoobie had a slipper issue? Not sure these even have slippers yet as I haven't looked lol. Will tighten it up a bit if it has.

Glad you're enjoying them, one thing me that might be worth doing is swapping the 6mm serrated wheel nuts for some 6mm nylocs one of mine kept coming loose never did work out why by nylocs are cheap so was a good fix, also might be worth checking what the esc low voltage cut off is set at think my it was me to low from memory.

Looking to get one of these, seen the reviews by Jang and Squirrelod, how is parts support in the UK, also are all the body shells mega expensive ?.

Had a look post run and noticed a few things.... Looks like the flat chassis collects rocks for fun and several gears etc had evidence of rock strikes. On one car the battery ESC lead was almost worn through as it got caught in the spur in the centre diff and the same gear had been rubbing on my battery case. Not much room really on the chassis layout. All in all they ran well and both ESC cutoffs are fine. I've replaced both battery bars with straps and cut some holes in the trays to fit my bigger bats. Roll on next bash!

Yes shells are expensive.. But all rally shells are. I have reinforced mine but they will slowly fall apart as all shells do. Parts look a bit expensive to me! I wanted to swap the shafts out for proper ones but they are listed at around $60 per pair plus centre shafts. No way am I dropping $200 on shafts for either of these trucks. I'll just run them until something breaks and then try and find a third party cheaper better part. Edited by MrPug

Spares are easy enough to get online from eBay or Hong Kong, longest I had to wait was a week for some hubs, and yeah they do collect rocks pretty well I added some bits to mine to offer more protection it made the world of difference I hardly get anything in there now just some dust which is nothing really, there's a link to my thread showing what I did and some photos from a bash where the shell took a lot of abuse and no damage thanks to the reinforcing. http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/index.php?/topic/161316-KarlP%27s-Kyosho-DRX-VE
