Can I charge Hubsan x4 on iPhone charger ?

Recommended Posts

The hubsan charger is just a usb charger designed to be plugged into a pc. Works just as well with wall chargers that use usb cables like the majority of phone and tablet chargers.

USB charger via a PC  = 0.5a or 500mah ( thats what pc usb ports dish out)

iphone charger usb = 2.0a or 2,000mah  ( thats what a iphone charger pumps out).

whats the difference, well its the mah rating of the cell, iphone has a 2000mah+ battery, so needs charging at 1c aka 2.0a

the poor hubsan has a very small mah battery say 500mah it should be charged at 1c aka 500mah NOT the 2.1a the iphone beast throws out.

your pushing the cell beyond its recomended C charge rate and this inturn brings possibility for a failure/fire of the cell/s

in question

That might be the case if it was directly connected to the battery. As very little is known about the usb dongle charger how safe would it be to presume that this doesn't restrict the current to the battery to prevent over charging or charging at too high a c rate? The dongle bit does have an led to say when the battery is charged so maybe it's smarter than you're giving it credit for.

I think there's a lot to presume without facts but I'm just saying what's worked fine for me for the last 5-6 months of daily use.

yeah i am not a fan of those usb chargers.

yes they very handy but they just aint rated for what rc stuff uses.

chargers are different, the iphone charger needs to feed atleast 2a so they rate them to 2.1a.

my samsung galaxy tab has to have a 2amp charger sequence otherwise it dont work.

i have two samsung usb wallies , one for phone and one for pad.

oneday my pad wouldnt charge up, i had mistakenly plugged in the phone charger plug

it was feeding 1a but would not fire the pad up. but just swapping to the 2a charger worked a treat.

the reason the manual states " does not work with ipnone stuffz " is because the iphone chargers thump  out 2.1a and the small usb is only rated at around 900mah max i would have said

i thought with these usb chargers using a 2a one over a 1a one won't charge it any quicker as depends on deivce connected to it?

everything is different.

chargers just output what they are told or by the way they are produced and componets used.

usb is a low power device, it runs on max 5v and usually 500mah for usb2 ( you may find usb3 runs a higher current maybe 1a-2a )

secondly dont forget your charging a lipo, but you say " meh tami is daft its a little 3.7v lipo so what "

its still a lipo and is a fire hazard so must be cared for as that. they still pack a punch inside if they get damaged.

Manual, Many many a time i did not read the manual, last time i nearly lost a finger tip.

i have 4x 1s 600mah 30-70c lipos each one is charged single unit and at a max 500mah.

flight batterys need a little extra care, you want them to last but be in good condition.

You could overcharge it a tad or just pump in 2c charge rate so its ready in 15 mins, BUT

reward = risk , you could put that nice fresh battery into the quad, punch the throttle and it hits LVC right away.

the cells internals are damaged enough that it just cannot give whats required any more.

that manual is a guide line, if it states not iphone compatable its because iphone are amp guzzlers.

those cheapy batery banks you see come with 2x usb port, one gives 1a aka 1000mah , the second is for tabs phabs and ipones

as they require atleast 2a aka 2,000mah as a charge requirement. the USB dongle is only rated at 5v and 500mah it will take around 1a

but thats maxed out and producing a lot of internal heat through the regulator and pushing the curcuits limits, 2a would just fry it or make it unstable

over a short period

Tell you what, I'll keep charging using my 2.1A iPad charger and I'll let you know when it burns my office down.

And for the sake of providing sound advice via the forum we'll say it should only be charged as per the guidelines in the manual.

  • 5 weeks later...

I have to admit I used my samsung charger adaptor, instead of my PC, last weekend and the battery got a bit warmer than I felt comfortable with. It didn't seem to affect the run time once it had cooled though.

I'd possibly consider using it for the '5 at a time' usb I have though..

get a usb charger doctor from ebay, you can see the charger change the rate of charge as it goes. from my pc usb it pulls 0.25-0.3A, the 1 amp phone charger allows it to draw double that.

As time passes the current draw drops. I've been using a phone charger for over a year with 5 batteries, I've been fine. When I'm out and about without 240V, I use a hobby king usb device from a 2S lipo battery to charge the lipos. It does the job a treat :)

i charge mine using a rc chargeriTvOtXRsiR6qh.jpg

Where did you get that board from bud?

Can't seem to find one with the right connectors on and charging six batteries singularly is becoming a pain lol

i pulled off the white connectors, put some red paint on the positive side so i know what side is what, and plug them in.

with that you can charge many packs at once, for this, add the capacity up for all the packs, say you got 4x 250mah packs, charge at 1000mah
