TW's Bajas - "Sheila", "Ruby", & "Kyu"

got abit weird having a separate thread for each baja so i had them all locked

this thread will be serving as the update for all current and any future baja models i build or buy, just to keep things in one place.

all my models get names, or atleast most of them do, such naming is always female, hence sorority in the title, they ar as follws

1st baja, the one that started it all, i named Sheila, started the whole naming thing which was originally a family joke, colour theme is blue, and silver, purple was added to break it up alittle futher, you can find her thread here: http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/topic/91293-thunders-1st-baja-sheila/

Sheila has recently had a change of engine which i'm unsure even works, so the next update on here will depend on that

2nd baja is Ruby, started as afew spare parts before my mind turned to the idea of buying parts when i could and building up a baja over time, using the hopup i wanted from what i learnt with Sheila, starting as a 2nd petrol baja things changed and i started to make her into a baja flux instead, Ruby's thread can be found here: http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/topic/184054-thunders-baja-flux-build-ruby/

Ruby currently sits unfinished, the ESC (a trackstar 200a 8s) is currently in the post, she only requires the shell painted, a motor, and the batteries to get running

3rd Baja is Blake, curently in the beginning stages she is being built slightly differently, in that all stock parts i'll run are being bought 2nd hand, unlike Ruby which got mostly brand new parts, the thread for Blake can be found here: http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/topic/189182-thunders-baja-build-blake/

first update is for Blake, got some limited parts together, many of which you can't see in the below picture, but this is what i have got to so far

DSC08452.jpg

it is somewhat limited, there shall be more to this once i get the chassis and hingepins as i'll be able to put alot more together, but thats not planned until Ruby is done.

and before i forget, the baja in the background of the first picture of this thread, well, thats Yang, more info on her at another time though.

yes, i'm eventualy going to have 4 working bajas...what can i say, i enjoy them.

Like the naming of them, but I didn't realise that Blake could be a girls name. Looking forward to seeing them all finished. I bought that same trackstar esc for my flux build, happily surprised by its quality so far and I have been running it on 8s. It's much better than I thought it would be for the money. Let us know how large your grin is when you 1st run the elecky....

I too am an aficionado of the multiple baja. I have built nearly three now just from spare parts, and there is two that I bought complete but I'm thinning out the fleet a little ATM due to space. Are you planning on building any more?

thanks perruzo

i plan on only running 6s to begin with but i'm considering trying 8s to see what its like, the reviews for the trackstar i've been reading have been very hit and miss when i comes to 8s running but for what its costs i thought why not

Blake being a girls name seems to be alot more common in the USA, Ruby, Blake and Yang, are all named from a webshow i've started following, all the nbames of the car (baja or otherwise) do have some kind of reason for each name in some way.

there is a 5th baja planned, but thats not until way in the future if at all, depends how thing go in term of disposable income really.

if you are thinning out your fleet tohugh, i could be interested in some of the parts to get Yang and Blake finished.

Update for Sheila

had some time and decent enough weather to give the spares or repairs engine ago.

for ones you haven't followed her thread the engine came in a large job lot, it had a bearing that was very worn so i had it taken apart and looked it over.

bearings came out of the smashed up crankcase from a obr engine that broke a conrod and obliterated the crankcase, con rod and piston, the bearing survived and i'm happy i keep it around, i also replaced the gaskets and oil seals just to be safe.

i put it all back together afew days ago using the flywheel, coil, etc from the methanol engine iwas running before.

anyway it got to starting it up, took abit of carb adjustment but she fired up and idled nicely, afew revs showed some tuning needed to doing but nothing difficult.

good news ends here, after running for about 2 mins the idle started to flutter slightly, thinking it was just a build up of oil due to rich settings i gave it a quick throttle blip, i heard some metallic tapping noise, followed by a sound that resembles nail dropping onto concrete, this all happened in the space of about 2 seconds.

pulling off the pullstart cover to look into the slots i quickly noticed alot of the fins on the flywheel had been broken

while putting together the engine i noticed the lower coil screw was loose, tightening it was not possible but i could get it tight to a fashion, i hoped this would be enough but seems i was wrong and the coil dropped onto the flywheel.

i have a spare flywheel but it likely the coil is busted also, but i won't know until i check it out properly, if the coil is busted i have no spare so i'll have to look into finding a new one.

i'll also see about rethreading the head so i can use it but i have another piston and head here i could fit that came from the same joblot, but again, no idea if these are usable.

Update time.

Sheila:-

spares engine isn't working out so i'm looking for another, will be chucking the head from this but the rest i shall keep as its still usable, minus coil and flywheel.

Blake:-

i have since got most of the hpi parts i want for this, there are some bits still missing but that can be dealt with further into the build when i come to actualy need them, due to having ruby to finish blake is on hold until such a time as ruby is done and running and i'll start buying the upgrades i want for her, should be a fun truck once finished although its going to take some time

Ruby:-

had abit of a snag on the esc due to a "computer glitch" with hobbyking but its now been posted so i should see that in a week or two, i've also got some of the less needed parts from my joblot buying up for sale to help fun the cost of the motor, battery and ubec also needed as is paint for the shell, altohugh i have no idea when this will become finished due to my job becoming abit too varied to make long term plans.

Yang:-

pictures and full info to come in afew days. i'm working on her at the weekend. this bit is only for the people who keep asking what i'm doing with the baja in the background of a picture above

Update - Yang

a few things got changed since the pic above was taken, Yang has ended up getting built much faster than i thought it would, and had some parts missing that seemed pointless getting job lots for.

so in the interest of getting her built i have taken afew of the parts from Blake off to fit on Yang instead, not bothered by it as i can easily replace them and some i'm making upgrades instead, so no big deal there.

currently waiting to arrive in the post are some beadlock screws to screw together the wheels and tyres i have upstairs, also in the post is a pinion gear, only stock for now.

that will be all for now, once the wheels and pinion are fitted i'll take some picture of her on her own, along with much more in depth info on what is on her, the problems and plans.

Update - Sheila

took off the fan cover today and as i expected the coil had dropped, the screw holding it had come completely out and rattled around in the fan cover, which let the coil drop.

coil has some scratches on it but i may still work, worth a try atleast, but the flywheel has 17 broken fins, although i may be worth having it machined into a light weight flywheel as the fins only broke one side, something to look at, i got a spare one though so not a big deal.

now if i can find a way to fit the coil securly this should be a decent runner, if not i'm thinking of buying  new head and using that instead.

When you say the coil dropped has the mounting point on head broken or threaded I presume?

If its threaded you could easily tap it up .5 a size and just use a larger screw.

If its broken and you want to run it until the coil dies, you could easily use a high impact metal adhesive to hold the coil in place.

first 4 or 5mm of thread is totaly gone, but it fine the rest of the way, so i will put a longer screw into it and it should be good to go, will fit it all back together and see how it goes

if not and it doesn't work i got another engine here that i bought from pieman5, needs a circlip and head gasket but it should be able to run after abit of a clean out. failing that i bought a 29cc engine from hawkpalmer which i could use, either way i should have an engine i can run in both Sheila and yang

Fair enough well I look forward to you having at least a second runner rather than just the one :)

I would say as long as you put quite a bit of threadlock on the bolt and allow it to set for around 24 hours before using it, it should never come out again. Just remember the alloy on those heads are quite soft so just don't over tighten the bugger, once its in, give it one tight turn and the threadlock will do the rest.

my worst enemy is my own attention span, right now its on Yang, yesterday it was all on Sheila, day before that i was dealing with Krystal, i just can't seem to stick to one car and finish it before moving onto something else.

even now i'm looking at parts i want for Blake lol

Update - Sheila & Yang

Sheila:

taken off the busted flywheel and fitted one of my spares, bolted the coil on correctly this time and made sure its not going any where, took her out to test to make sure the coil didn't get too damaged and she fired up without a problem and happily idled in place for afew moment before shutting her off for the night, shall be giving her a run tomorrow if the weather stays nice.

Yang:

funny how Yang has come about, all them job lots to build Blake and i've managed to build Yang at the same time and even finished her faster, due to not really caring what goes on her. build wise i'll be putting upgrades on when i break things or have the money to do so, which ever comes first. like with Blake i have already planned out Yang to the smallest detail i can think of so it is just a question of time.

i view of how she is almost complete i have bought some specific things just to get her running, them being an engine, yamadude throttle/brake linkage, fuel lines, tank grommet and filter clunk, as well as a shell, all are 2nd hand, once these have arrived and been fitted i shall show you what i've ended up with before i got a start making changes to her.

Yang is mostly made from stock parts with the exception of the km alloy front shock tower and brace as well as an i-rc brake mount, also on her are silverback rc beadlocks and proline badlands rear tyres. some of the parts on her are brand new but came as part of a job lot of other parts, roll cage for example, most of her parts are a bit rough around the edges but these are all things she would get over time anyway so it no big deal.

looking forward to having her done

Gees, 4x bajas dude ??? Lolol thats alot of maintenence, im currently running 2 bajas (one kraken with a esp zen 29 and a 5b with a 26cy) and im considering flogging the 26cc one as its alot of expense and time just to keep those 2 going and upgrading them of course lol, although now you have kinda sparred me on to keep them both, i like your style in the sense of building up 4 bajas from parts and taking your time with them, ive had bajas for years and there a fantastic rc and in my opinion the most fun 1/5 scale, i like your ruby baja, she looks nice.
