Quanum aquaholic and relentless from hobbyking..

So after facing up to the fact that if want to participate in and get any use out of my local club membership I need to get a boat that's appropriate for the size water I'll be running in.. Both the great Yarmouth and Gorleston ponds are pretty small and my other boat are quite frankly like a shark in a tea cup.

I was toying with the idea of getting a nether centurion but to my delight the uk warehouse of Hobbyking took delivery of some new hulls that appear to be just the ticket..

This is the quanum aquaholic

Here are some unboxing pics

In the box you get the boat itself, a pre installed esc and motor and servo, two props and some Allen key and a balloon with a rubber band.

Build time is around a half an hour for the experienced or I'd say just over an hour someone new to boats.

Just a note regarding the esc, it will not arm in any way shape or format unless it has a configured rx and tx plugged into it..

Here is my half an hours work..

A nice tidy interior

And here she is ready for a dunk..

Now a few words on build quality etc.

I paid 120 delivered for this boat and two lipos which in my opinion is very good value as this hull makes the centurion look like garbage, the exterior decals are all under the clearcoat and it's an abs hull so it'll take some knocks without to much fuss, the interior is well layed out and other than relocating the esc and altering the cooling routing it was a pleasure to set up..

My only gripe is the plastic props but that's a minor niggle as a new prop isn't a deal breaker.

Wet testing tomorrow and that aside I'm pretty confident that it's gonna be a cracker for the money..

Be interesting to see how this one runs. Like the look of the cat version 'relentless'. Had to chuckle though...I thought you'd mis-typed the title and it should have been 'Quantum' ... but no :) Hobby King have called it a 'Quanum'.

The only thing I would worry about with an ABS hull would be damaging it. Fibreglass you can patch...but ABS you can't. As long as it's tough enough, that shouldn't be an issue though.

Damn...I wish I had somewhere close by I could run a decent sized boat!

It's gotta be tougher than my surge crusher, I clipped the side of our pond on Thursday evening while I was having go at some point to point racing round the bouys, now I have a chipped transom and a shed load of crazed gel coat to repair..

Heya mate, just a personal preference thing, I like to keep the runs of pipe as short and neat as possible the esc is also on the opposite side to the way it was set up when I opened it..

Hopefully mine will be sorted out soon and i can add some views from a first boat side .. Looking forward to see you float it for the first time

gonna try and get some footage today, off to the pond in a minute.

am the same as smash. short cooling lines.

if you need to go long, i would replace the silicone hose with a brass/copper tube.

a few other on a differnet forum discussed that silicone in long lengths hinders flow preformance

so best used in very short runs.

me i just hate long tube snakes getting in the way.

Oh dear just tanked it into a wall at full beans, it's got a sore nose now, never mind it'll polish out.. Posted Image

On the plus side it's a very nippy little boat and it'll make a great first rig for the uninitiated, water had gotten into the receiver and It became unresponsive like a rubber away and doink straight into the side.. Heard a few chuckles so at least someone is happy ;) footage after tea..

When I asked about how durable an ABS hull was, I didn't expect you to go that far to test it :)

On the plus side....we now know how thick the plastic is on the nose section....

Can you fix that with fibreglass?

yeah it's a fixer, expandable foam, then some fibre glass, and then some gel coat, it won't be invisible but it'll float ;)

Ouch you at it again fella looks like your old centurion now!! Never mind at least you can fix it ..

Have you worked out how the water got in yet ?

yeah the balloons are really thin, should have used my own stash as the one supplied had a tiny hole in it.. Presto instant runaway.. Get yourself some nice thick latex balloons ;) or water bombs although they are smaller and a really tight fit over an rx, good for small areas though..

You chopped its nose of now that's not very nice  :harhar:

Whats the plan i see you just used some expandable foam and shaped it, so whats next fiber glass sheets ?? resin?

Be handy to have a step by step guide for the new comers as i'm bound i mean they are bound to smack theirs !!

Nice fishing what that's a telescopic rod??  Was all going well till the flip  :whistling:

lol to make it good you've got to clip the bad bits off ;)

Yeah the steps for repair are pretty simple first it's the clipping to make a clean area to fill, then I cut and shaped a price of the era packaging it came in and offered it up dry into the hole to make sure it's the right shape.

Then that is glued in with some 15 min epoxy and given a coat on the outside to harden it up a bit, once that has gone off I then put a layer of rapid steel filled epoxy over the top to really strengthen it. This stuff goes off in a matter of minutes and can be sanded or drilled etc. So after about an hour I roughly sanded it to shape and that was where I left it last night..

This morning I went down the pound shop and got myself some paint brushes, mixed up some gel coat filler and brushed the first layer on, again this stuff goes on like paint but cures in minutes so you have to be quick, it's roughly sanded back after about 20 minutes. Then a final layer of gel coat is added and this one is sanded back as smooth as you can get it and contoured with the hull using a mixture of grades and a sanding block, I haven't gone to mad with it because it being painted over tomorrow in red ;) and then lacquered again..

Hopefully it's helpful for those of you that may end up in the same er... Boat :D

And remember nice thick balloons round your receiver..

Here are some pics

yeah once the layers have gone of though they are very rigid, easily as much as the original hull and once its painted it wont even notice..
