KarlP's Kyosho DRX VE

Hey folks! So i've always had a Rc rally car of some type or another currently i have a Tamiya DF03-RA which i've been having a play with over the last few months as id forgot how much fun they were! But the only thing I never liked was it was a little small in size, so i had a look around and after a lot of reading and googling i settled on a Kyosho DRX VE.

So i ordered this lot:

Kyosho DRX VE with a Subaru Shell

MP9 Body

MP9 Side Guards

Spektrum RX

Shoe Goo

Plasterboard Tape

Gorilla Tape

6mm Nylocs

So First thing i started on was the shell as they seem to be made of some rather thin plastic. I started off smearing some Shoe Goo about then laying the Plasterboard tape into it this is very messy lol

20130106_130029_zps77827600.jpg

It was the first time i had ever done this to a shell so i learned a lot, made a few mistakes and will do it a lot differently next time. I was a little surprised how much of a difference it made it will be interesting to see how it holds up in the inevitable crashes lol.

Next i went over the inside with Gorilla tape for some added strength and I figured it couldn't hurt to give it some more protection.

20130109_191616_zpsf8eb41e0.jpg

Next i fitted the Side Guards using the existing holes in the chassis I had to cut the guards around the rear diff assembly a little to allow them to fit.

20130106_122957_zps02b007c9.jpg

As a result of fitting the side guards it caused two new issues i needed to address, First i had to raise the battery try up as it couldn't sit in the original position due to the side guards, to do this i used 4 shock balls from my SCX10 kit these picked it nicely and with some slightly longer screws it was sorted.

20130106_123036_zps72080602.jpg

Once id picked the batter tray up it then fouled the spur so i cut a notch out of it. I also fitted a couple of velcro straps to secure the battery.

20130106_123018_zpsc41e6624.jpg

Then i cut a small strip of aluminium and stuck it over the hole which will protect the battery and still provide the gap needed for it to clear the spur, It also got a strip of tape over it lol.

20130106_130946_zpsbd6dbcec.jpg

Next job i swapped out the stock RX and put it in my Spektrum one i will probably change the stock servo but it can stay in for a while until i get used to the car, i also set up the esc so the lipo cut off was at 3.2v and adjusted the end points on the servo throw so its not going to far.

Next i cut out the MP9 body so it will fit over the side guards and thats where i have got to at the moment.

Jobs to do :

Adjust the side guards near the rear wheels for more clearance as i think once i velcro the body and guards it will be very tight.

Fit rear guards on the shock arms to give the rear drive shafts some protection

Fit some type of chassis protection, Tape, plastic sheet/wrap and maybe something over the odd little hole under the spur ( why is that there anyways? lol )

So Any thoughts suggestion for where i should be heading or doing id love to hear!

Thanks for taking the time to read this, also sorry about the pics my dslr is in for repair and i only had my phone.

First off, Welcome the the rally section Karl. Glad you have spent so much time with this post.

I love the DRX, I don't have one but when i was looking into rally. This was a strong contender. Only issue for me was the pricing but it will be worth it.

You have got all the right idea on the car. The side skirts on the car will make a big diffeence. not just for the capture of stray dirt bit it should add an little weight to the overall wheelbase of the car. It will also improve the undercarriage drag you would get from bad aero dynamics.

Anyways: some ideas to have a look at improving:

- some cover for the spur unde and over if you can.

- there looks to be some distance from the chassis of the car to the wheels through the front and rear arms. They will more than likely be the first to go if you take an off centre hit. Look at upgrades (don't spend too much as you will replace these many times. just look at getting a couple of sets on stock)

- under chassis as you said. Have a look at an alu plate that will either just glue of fix with screws. You want to replace this easy if you can s go with the glue. It will also cover screw heads that you don't need access to all the time. There will also be a smooth under belly that will not catch on dirt and again a small aero dynamic improvement

- get harder shocks for the rear as the car will now have a good weight and the car will loose the power on a bad weight weight transfer.

- make up a PVA glug and water mix (around 60% glue and 40% water) brush this on the under chassis over the tape. This means when the car gets all muddy then you can just take it outside and hose it without the tape lifting.

You seem to be on the ball. these are silly after thoughts you can do anytime.

Please let us all know how you are getting on.

Thanks Andy, I thought id do a build/car thread on this nice to find a few others into rally, yeah it was not cheap but i had some cash for xmas and done a few hours overtime at work i should really sell my drifter and firestorm and some other stuff as i don't use them lol.

Yeah i was looking at the underside today i suspect i'll use a heavy duty tape to shield it unless i get one of the Team Associated under cover things, i like the pva glue idea thats rather cunning!

Right today i finished trimming up the underbody and got it mounted up with velcro, its pretty close on the rear wheels i'll see how it goes i might end up reshaping the side guards but id rather not if possible.

20130112_134823.jpg

i also used some of the foam from my peli case to plug the rear end where there was a gap it weights nowt and sits in there without any need to fix it

20130112_134844.jpg

I may cut some holes in the underbody for more airflow over the esc, if i do i may fill the holes with body mesh it will stop most of the crap but still help with airflow or i could mount up a couple of small fans to draw air in, but it never really gets hot here for more than a few days anyways lol.

So i took it out for the first time today outside where i live, dam its quick a lot quicker than i thought it would be so much fun though.

So i need to get some road tyres for it and another set of rally tyres as i expect these will soon wear lol

A couple of pics of it with the shell on.

Thats lovely mate. (in a manly voice)

Theres a lot of time put into that and it will pay off. That under shell cover looks great. Did that come with the car? I had an idea recently about moulding the chassis protection. I dont know how easy it will be to do but it would be good if you could make a home-made mould of that wee shell just incase (more than likely) it breaks. Means you dont need to buy another. just an idea

The cover is close to the wheels but you should be ok mate. if you are any good with that glue and that mesh i would suggest making yourself some wheel arches that you can attach to your shell. If you can that is. It will be a day worth of work but if you get it right then you will sort out around 80% of in car damage caused by large stones.

Please keep this going. Its great to see people spending so much time on their cars like this

Just a note about the wheels. there a 12mm hex wheel so you have some good options. On the MS site you can get these bad boys

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/kyosho-rally-tyre-on-white-15-spoke-wheels-4-drx/rc-car-products/38669

I wouldnt spend that much on them though (sorry MS) they look like they would wear down fast.

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/wheels/rc-car-categories/9960/996015&MSAttributeID[58]=1192 - rally wheel set. (HPI Black set are nice and they also have your gold spoke aswell)

Hope these help mate

lol ty, No its the Body from the Kyosho MP9 Buggy as are the side guards, i think it should have come with some side guards at least, it did come with a little cover over the esc but tbh it was a **** poor effort so it got turned into m'n'm holder ;)

Aye thats not a bad idea of making a mold of it as its under the actual shell it would'nt matter if it turned out a little rough.

I like the idea of some inner arches i think i have some tube at work i can use as a mould i'll bring some home from work and see, i shall check wickes on the way home this week and see what their drainage pipe sizes are too.

Also need to look into a better charger would be nice to do a couple of batteries at a time.

Yeah i think if i keep using them on hard surfaces at full tilt they will wear out, tbh i did not think that was to bad of a price for x4 its dam cheaper than my bajas tyres and i think my scx10 ones were more lol If this snow comes like they say i will need to look for some spiked ones lol.

  • 4 months later...

So been a little while since I updated this thread sorry about that! So I've been running this a couple of times a week since I got it and I love it clearly my fav fast rc I own :-D.

So I've changed the diff oil to 5k for all three diffs and added the extra idea gears Ive put about 15 packs through it since I figured I'd end up changing the oil and try different combos but so far I enjoy it as it is so unless summin breaks it will stay that way.

As for durability it seems to be doing fine I have broke one stub axle but I did clip a log at full tilt lol and I'm on my third set of tyres but its been used over multiple surfaces and I am rather throttle happy :-D So far the shell is holding up I am glad I taped and glued the inside I think it has saved it a great deal all I've done so far is split the spoiler a little, it's got a few scratches and rubs but that's to be expected, I think I will order up some bearings for the hubs as I think they will need doing soon they are not as smooth as they once had been. Also I need to improve the filth guard a little as it does collect grass rather well lol

Yeah that was a nice result I was half tempted to get it for spares but touch wood other than tyres I've hardly broke anything, it's worth doing the underbody mods it really keeps the crap out, also nylocs on the wheels are handy

Going to make my own 'outerwears' type under body cover out of some water resistant breathable material and velcro it on

Also going to make a chassis protector out of a piece of 3mm A4 lexan I have lying around.

just got a couple of sets of Proline dirt hawgs and awaiting my gold kyosho rims from amainhobbies to mount them on.

Yeah my first attempt at underbody protector has only lasted a few months so I will have to look into something better for it, you'll have to let me know how those tyres perform not tried them yet I am on my last set of the stock ones I picked up four sets cheap of the original wheels/tyres from eBay just after I got the DRX

my mate tried a 3s lipo in his one and it does make a difference but not as much as you think as it did`nt really seem that much faster compared to the 2s he was running before hand but i may have just been him being safe but i doubt it as he`s a maniac with rc cars most of the time.

@rcrally those wheels and tyres on the ms site are tiny compared to the kyosho wheels and tyres the the drx comes with. its like comparing them to a 1/8 buggy wheel and trye combo when you see them side by side the fastrak are miniscule

Yeah i thought so. I never knew this was a 1/9. Forgot i told you about them. I am about to get my hands ona WR8 and thats a 1/9. How do you find the 1/9 tyre sets. I heard they run down very fast.
