Thinking of buying a 4wd fg baja I have the 2wd at the moment but really fancy 4wd are there any pro's/con's to them I'd be buying new and the reason for it being fg is I like how simple they are to work on/fix I've had 2-3 fg's now so know them fairly well too

I converted 1 of my marders to 4wd and its totally transformed the car. Its planted and handles really well compared to the 2wd and no problems with the drive system so far either. I would say go for it!! Either buy new or just buy the conversion kit for your 2wd as you get new chassis & loads of parts with it so you would be able to make up your 2wd again for next to no cost. My plan was to sell 1 of my 2wd's then the 4wd was effectively a free kit but not got round to it yet!!

How hard wearing is the 4wd system tho and is it much slower can they take the same power that a 2wd baja takes or would it be to much strain what do you use yours for as I'd consider myself to really abuse my car when out bashing but lavish it when it needs it too :-)

When I bought the 4wd kit I was talking to Stevo in rossmods and he said he could do me a nice engine for it that would really wake it up but its not exactly slow at the minute. With him saying that I assume it will handle a tuned engine and Im sure FG would have tried it anyway cos if it was only tested on a stock mill chances are it would be unreliable and would be no good for racing. Im hoping to get either a Stevo or Oddie engine in Sept funds permitting but in the meantime Im going to change the gearing up to 20/44 and will get 22/42 to try as well. The gearing is slightly different on the 4wd in that it has a 14T layshaft gear which is effectively 1 gearing behind the 2wd stock set up. It gives it more acceleration but the 4wd can get the power down better so it really takes off well. Mine can spin up all 4 wheels even with the marder spikes which are really grippy on grass. You can also throw it into corners and it stays planted and doesnt grip role at all.

The 4wd system has been good so far with no problems at all. I thought something had gone last week when it turned into front wheel drive but it was only a wheel square that had come loose! As far as abuse goes, it gets thrashed and there are some decent jumps on the field where I am based at the minute but it doesnt get thrown 20ft in the air if thats what you mean by abuse! (If I wanted to do that I would get a smaller scale nitro!) It jumps better than the 2wd IMO with the extra weight of a diff over the nose.

BTW its running a 26.9cc DDM ported head kit with FG tuned pipe at the minute so its already up slightly on stock and handles the power well. The FG pipe is a good all round performer and is quiet-ish compared to most others.

Dwarfy what's the best way of setting the fg 4wd so you don't get the nose pushing wide, & having the back end stepping out so you get more of a 4wd drift through corners?

Also what shock oil settings for fr & rr

Sorry!!

Back on topic. I have not seen an FG 4wd baja at a race track, and do not bash, so am unable to comment on how they hold up or perform. However knowing FG models, I suspect it will be very reliable in general with the usual upgrades as you go and brake stuff.

I would say go ahead and get one and enjoy the experience.

The Belt system is really good (sealed and is kept clean!) ,very reliable indeed! Power wise, mine is a flyer and its standard nothing to compare against the 2 wd version (had one of those)

Mine is all standard as i say but nothings broken ,the parts are extremely tough !

Its not unstable its much better than the 2 wd version .

Totally agree mate. Mine is standard plastic still (as are all mine!!) and it flies. Just got a slightly upgraded head kit and FG tuned pipe but nothing special but its the way it gets the power down which is impressive.

Hi I am considering doing a 4W/D conversion how is it still performing?

If anyone else has done the same please let me know your experiences.

Cheers

Mike
