Having 3 in 5 years puts a different spin on things, teaches valuable lessons about what is important in life, achieving a good balance of self... That may sound like like the type of rubbish vomited forth from the mouths of yoghurt weavers and moss jugglers as they sit about crafting their wares amongst the ever-growing crowd of scruffy kids and dogs on a rope, however folks, it's true and I have (through a series of unfortunate events) found myself in a position where I can realise the odd dream.....hence this little exercise in cash expenditure in the name of fun and enjoyment, and (dare I say it) r/c reliability!?!?!. I love short course, have done since catching LOORRS on cable some time ago - something about the simplicity of the trucks - big V8s, no fuel injection, crazy rednecks, love it! 1/10th is great, but having seen a video of the 5SC during a visit to MS, I was hooked.... Following several discussions with my better half, an internet trawl ensured that the ball was about to start rolling...... Less than 24hrs from ordering, the following was delivered: Inside was this The Haribos have now gone btw, like they would last the length of the build http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/rolleyes.gif Inside that lovely box, I discovered this - and then ALL this and I nearly pooped myself when I opened a small box containing this (monkey wasn't included, he's just there for a sense of scale) The SIMPLE plan is thus - bin the petrol aspects of power and replace them with a brushless system. Why brushless? . I love the 6 cylinders in the heart of my Bavarian Bitch and the 4 cylinder 16v fun of the Pooma -Petrol is just not for me in the scale world. I have been aware of the brushless conversion kit available for the Baja from Castle for a while now, but this is not for me either. Why not? - I have a mamba Monster in my EMBE, and whilst I love it, the inherent fragility of their esc's is a concern. Now please don't go spouting off about supreme reliability all u Castle supporters, I have no wish to start a debate or argument with any of you (after all, we all know what arguing on the internet is like,.......). It comes down to personal choice. If I am shelling out substantial money on a motor and esc for use in an outdoor situation in (almost) all conditions, I must consider something which is built to withstand such conditions. i am not taking an expensive and under warranty esc apart to use a solution to waterproof it...... so to MGM......as they can supply the right kit for the job, designed as waterproof from the off http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/thumbsup.gif http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/thumbsup.gif I paid a very fair price for the kit (as confirmed by MS who would have been out of pocket had they matched the purchase price!) and will claw back some money for the pot by selling on the motor, pipe, tank and odd spare bits. Upgrades will naturally be fitted - research as to what are considered the most beneficial is about to commence. I would rather fit these from the off, than build and then take apart the truck to retro-fit The whole motor/esc/installation side is largely undetermined too but I am happy to take my time to ensure this goes as smoothly as possible. High-voltage setups are not easy to get to grips with, like anything high performance, they are a lot more likely to cause problems. and yeah, that Baja was a steal mate, quite literally got it at trade! I think they've realized now. Nick, thank you - it was our chat at the back end of last week that helped me to my decision, esp with the MGM news..... I've had a look at those LMT motors and they are gorgeous! I have no issue with paying for quality, and this build HAS to be top quality from the off..... As for melting VXLs, i may have done another one, in which case I'll be seeing you at some point today! looks good just taken delivery of my BL baja and loving it so far really didnt expect it to be so big!!! one thing i would say tho... you should have gone for the limited edition 5SC ss... the Slipper clutch will come in handy on a the high powered BL setups your gonna run Ah, the slipper clutch issue - one of the burning questions in my head at the mo.....research time I think! And yes, it is HUGE - I collect 1/6th scale anyway so am used to large scale vehicles, however this is just amazingly huge - still in negotiation as to where it will live when built Subscribed, definitely would have gone for a 5ive had it been me. It also allows me to fit upgrades as I go, rather than fitting stock parts and then removing them. Mgm make great stuff, I have 2 of their ESCs. The turnigy motor I'm running is good for 60 volts, but if you're looking to spend big bucks then look at the CC motors, expensive but awesome. Noj Posted February 26, 2012 Author Share Posted February 26, 2012 (edited) Sunday 26th Feb Brief update - research is on-going however RPM upgrade arms are next on the list, as I can't start building it til I get some. Am away this week for a few days too so won't get these ordered til t'back end of t'week..... And to add fuel to the fire, I'm contemplating fitting front brakes; I think that by adding a separate braking system, it will reduce wear on the motor by not using that to brake the truck.... A rear brake comes with the kit, a nice set of hydraulic front brakes might just be what's needed...something like: http://www.r2hobbies...rod=rcvp5050034 Purchases - a Tx and Rx, bargain price, brand new return to MS missing packaging, so a fair deal was struck. The system has built in telemetry, so i will be able to monitor (amongst other things) on board temp from the handset; running high voltages as we know generates heat, fans will clearly be fitted but being able to see what temp is going on in there could save many pounds in the long term, especially when the truck is several hundred feet away! And the Black Iron shock socks arrived from Germany - they won't be seen but will be in keeping with the shell/theme, as well as doing their intended job! I wasn't aware of needing a 4ch, but that's the fun of learning I am looking forward to this , nice cat Big Puss says thank you for admiring her rump! She is a most pleasing animal and is currently curled up on our lasses lap. She will, no doubt, become a right PIA when assembling the kit! Also, I am not using this for anything other than bashing for now, but would look at racing in the future. In my mind, I want a system which is capable of more voltage and power than I intend to run; if I am never running the system at max but still having great enjoyment, then expensive electics SHOULD last a long time. and if I ever want more from the truck, it is already there, with just an esc tweak or battery increase. I must arrange to take Nick for a beer after work, feed him some pub grub and then delve into the workings of his mind, for his understanding of large brushless sytems is good. Any other advice is greatly appreciated though. sorry if that all sounds a bit crap, the full magnitude of certain elements of this build is slowly settling in!!!
