Hi all

As title says, how to test the temp of a nitro engine. I've got a temp gun and wanna start tuning the engine with the aid of the gun. Do I take the temp whilst the engine is ticking over, or do I take the temp once I've ran the engine? Ie thrash the car about and then bring car in and test temp straight away?

take the temp after you have been driving it as you normally would- as you do not want it overheating under your normal driving conditions- If your too hot your too lean- but also if your too rich it wont be hot enough so then you can lean it out a bit for better performance  oh and take the temp from the top of the glow plug...

You take the temp when engine is hot and up to temp. I don't no what engine you have but aim for 230F plus only tune when engine is up to temp. Aim the temp gun down towards the glow plug to take temp remember tuning by temp is only a guide.

That's guys. Thought it would be like that. As soon as the car starts to idle the temp starts to fall. So guess you have to be quick to get the temp.

One thing that must be said - NEVER tune to temperature
Always tune by sound and smoke output and power

the temp gun is a guide to how the engine is running and to how the tune is

as for when to take it - Run the engine let it get hot first
After its been running just flash the Sensor over the glowplug ish area and see what you've got

200F if its been idling for a long time
250f MAX if you've just been ragging it super hard for like the past 5mins
220 - 230 is the ideal temperature range

Note rtr engines about 230-250 but race engines can go higher. I run around 270-280 an there fine

Race engines run higher temperatures due to the Compression
When ever you compress something, the temperature will always increase as well

As long as there is smoke - there is poke - it's fine

As a rough guide.Fahrenheit to Celsius.

200 F = 93 C
210 F = 99 C
220 F = 104 C
230 F = 110 C
240 F = 115 C
250 F = 121 C.

that rule doesnt really applie to optifuel rtr fuel. you could probably be really lean and still get smoke

True said, race engines can go a bit higher. I know because I have one also. If its RTR engine keep it at or below 105c..

If the RTR engine is well built, then it won't overheat no matter how hard you run it. But if its crap like Force then you have too many stallings :xd:

if its lean - the poke wont poke

its a case of knowing the car and the engine

It ain't no race engine. Just a hyper 21 4 port.
Just had the car out in the snow. It's great. Kinda impossible to keep it in a straight line. But fun none the less B)
