What are you trying to wire up exactly? Pictures, a full description & a diagram of what you want to do ( in MSPaint ) would be useful...

sounds like you have a little problem with wiring up your RC.
the red cable from motor to be connected to the + terminal on the esc
the black motor cable to the - terminal on the esc.
some motors have 3 wires,
red to + terminal on esc
black to - terminal on esc
the third cable is sometimes blue / yellow / green, this is a sensor cable and is hooked to the data terminal ( usualy the centre pin on the esc )
