Hello!

I thought I'd start a thread to chart the progress and my thoughts of the Ansmann Macnum. Here's what I've bought.

Ansmann Racing Macnum
Ansmann W5 radio
Power HD Servo
Etronix Photon 9R brushless system
Turnigy Nanotech 2s 30-60C hardcase
19 tooth pinion
Bearing set from RC bearings
Stainless steel screw set
Stainless M2.5 bolt for diff
Black dye for the wheels

So here's what most of that looks like, wheels now black :)

I didn't get around to doing anything else until this week, this is what it looks like at the moment.

Instructions seem pretty good, just a bit of head scratching with the servo saver.

A decent hex driver is a must IMO, even with the stainless screws I had some "moments" when using an allen key made of cheese, 2mm EDS driver is well worth the dosh.

Next up, swearing at all the tiny components in a bag called "Diff".

This is what it's all about building a kit from scratch and being proud of it...

I'm watching this with great anticipation,

Yep, i found that out the hard way with the front suspension arm holder, there's only about 4mm of plastic for the 8mm screw to bite into. A replacement was £2.84 though...and the driver gives a much better feel of when its tight enough.

When making the diff make sure you compress the spring a few times with a pair of pliers first,as this will help initial setup and stop the dreaded plate sqeal that so many have had problems with

Yep see that tip thanks, though I wasn't sure if you pre compress the diff spring, slipper spring or both?

So the diff and gearbox went together quite well, I cheated slightly by watching the gearbox build vid on http://www.rcmojo.com/ just to be sure.

I didn't like the idea of using thread lock and a couple of mm of aluminium thread to hold the gearbox and motor plate together, so I copied this mod http://thercracer.bl...-plate-fix.html

Seems nice and solid, and I only had to file the screw heads down slightly to clear the slipper plate.

Rear suspension tower & gearbox.

Todays progress.

I'm afraid I've got nothing to compare it to. The main chassis seems very sturdy, seems to be a different plastic to the smaller parts, probably reinforced.  You do have to watch it when tightening the screws, I stripped one thread when I thought something wasn't tight enough, luckily it was a sub £3 part.  I realised it wasn't a truck for driving into walls before I bought it, but everything seems plenty strong enough.

Everything fits together pretty well, a few rough edges to take off with a needle file or craft knife. The rear t plate is a known weakness, and before you screw the gearbox to it you can see why, but with the box in place it seems rigid enough, and its cheap to replace should it fail (I believe carbon / alloy replacements are available).

Due to the chassis brace breaking every time i hit a grain of sand i made my own chassis brace to go over the stock part, hasn't broken since i made it around 3/4 weeks ago...
