Tamiya Japan have released more pictures and details of the DB02 Leonis shaft driven 4WD 1/10 scale off-road buggy. The buggy that sports a 90 angled motor that is normally only seen in belt driven vehicles but a special transfer gearbox distributes the power to the front and rear ball differential. The middle drive train and motor mount are cast from alloy, make for good heat dissipation of the motor and the drive train is also updatable with an optional slipper clutch. Most of the buggy's parts such as the CVA oil-filled shock absorbers, shock towers, the chassis and wishbones are moulded from fibre reinforced plastic with the chassis also sporting an upper top deck for added stability.

I'd figured it was going to be a cheaper 502 like the Durga was for the 501 and the Zakkahthingie if for the 201, but moving the motor like that makes it a fundamentally different car. Very interesting......

I must admit, it's a poor show Tamiya still having plastic shocks when you can get decent threaded aluminium shocks on an Ansmann cost half what this probably will!

i'd like to know more about that gearbox, atm my best guess is the gears on the spur shaft are solid, but engaging the front and back seperately, meaning it does in effect have no middle diff, unless there's some clever use of owb's.

Well to be fair to Tamiya they must test with those shocks. I guess they see no reason to upgrade.

There's no centre diff, its just to allow the motor to be mounted across the chassis whilst keeping a shaft-driven transmission. As far as I know, there are no other 1/10th electric buggies with a transverse motor and shaft drive.

Now this I like!
Any idea as to what the front and rear diffs are gear or ball?
I hope they are geared as they are much easier to set-up and IMO are tougher.

Also the shocks do not bother me at all, they look like the plastic oil filled ones the DB01 came with and if built correctly they were excellent! way above the cap popping oil leaking Ansmann rtr things.

Love the idea of the centre gearbox. Also means the rest of the layout can be very neat and tidy. Battery tucks just under the rear driveshaft and everything looks very neat and tisy. A lot of thought has gone into it.

No idea if it runs as well as it looks, and I won't ever find out. It's a racers tool, and nice to look at...but not for me.

Course....they could always make an 1/8 version and use twin brushless motors ..... that might make for a giggle :)

Thats not a racers tool! The 511 and 502 are racers tools, this is at most a clubmans car, but also a sort of luxury basher. If its anything like the Durga it will supremely tough because far far more of them will never see a race track than will.
What I would like to see is a true racing version of this though - the 502 is the closest so far but doesn't feature the tranverse motor.

Ball diffs,

Yeah... they're rubbish..
They're the reason I got rid of my DB01 - car spent more time in bits having the diffs replaced than anything else.. <_<
