:shockingscary:  avoid the new castle stuff, it's not worth the risk! HobbyWing ESC's are getting better every week, and theyre dirt cheap - a wise investment!

Whats wrong with the New Castle stuff?

Am i missing something here?

Didn't your MMM blow up running 2s in a Stampede 4x4? Hobbywing stuff is great, far more reliable than castle stuff :good:

Well behold me on that! I though MM was the dogs balls

so does that mean HPI's Esc's which are very similar are just as likely to blow up?

Matt

yeppa, one MMM blew up running 2s on a 1900kv motor, another blew up running 6s in a hyper 7, then the last one blew up for no reason when it was plugged in on 4s. I've also killed a sidewinder running a vxl motor on 3s, and a hpi version of the sidewinder on 2s running in a rc18t on a 6800kv motor. I run hobbywings as replacements for all of the castle stuff ive burned out :good:

the old style mamba max stuff is great, I still run oen myself, its just the new stuff that's pants XD

When i have my thinking session this idea came to me

the Rustler did have a Tie bar on the front Arm hinge Pins

well they should be hinge pins, but they were way to fiddly, so they have been Rear Arm screws - 10x easier to work with

But the arms able to wobble a little bit forwards and backwards, well the tie bar will solve this

So off i went :)

10mins after several paper and card templates, i made a plastic one, its a flexible one, and it was basically free to make!

Taking the overbling front bulkhead down a notch :)

Posted Image

Happy bunny with it - has taken some slack out of it

Also decided to stop wires chaffing on the cable retention, shame its yellow.... im playing with ideas atm tho.....

well i ordered some firestorm 10T shocks
A because there cheap
B - i already have some on the front :)
C - Shock repairs are easy and parts are a plenty

Order some suitable firestorm Shock socks to save on constant fluid changes

Posted Image

So i went to fit the Rear ones.... i Cant..... didnt get any shock balls to ensure a nice fit....
bummer.... Cant fit those today, hoping i could

So i though okay - i can do the fronts atleast.....
So i thought..... Strip them down to clean them, so the new oil and socks can go on

But hang on? Why does this shock bounce and this shock doesn't when compressed (without spring btw)
Well Bummer....
Posted Image
Posted Image

So When the restoration project should be going forward..... its going backwards

So Stuck Buggy shocks back on and now going need to order :(

Well its time i made a start on the Hyper 7

So meet my beloved
Hobao Hyper 7 .21 TQ

Its been through alot and it needs a lift
Here she is in her current state
Posted Image

did have a stock shell on it
I was originally going to spray the shell black, but that never happened.
I did however repair the very damaged Mounting hole, with a pretty strong fix
Posted Image

Here she is with her Shell off
Posted Image
Posted Image

she needs to be cleaned and diagnosed to start with
Out comes the radio gear after 2 mins
Posted Image

And the engine
Posted Image

and the fuel tank
Posted Image

Leaving a Near bare chassis
Posted Image

However, the beloved signs of Yet again - another leaking diff
It was seized, dragged the rear wheels when pulled, so i think these go hand in hand.... probably time for new bearings? Stripping Will commence soon
Posted Image

Anyway - the Car is a mess, so lets start with a little cleaning
The Rolling Chassis for now, engine is another day, and so is the radio

Meet my Friend Mr Pressure Cleaning Gun :whistling:
Posted Image

Its works to a degree, but this has been sat on the car for about a year? so its baked on pretty well, i can see signs of lovely corrosion starting too :(

Anyway - Here she is now

Thats all for now

I'd be tempted to give it a blast with a hose pipe, a scrub with some soapy water and extra detergent, or brake cleaner, and then another blast with the hose pipe to get all of the muck off. Afterall, if you're replacing bearings then it shouldn't matter so much.

yea im might go for more rubber sealed versions

They have prooven godly compared to MS, plus i keep opening them up, cleaning them out good and packing with grease
They have done me well

Over 10gallons of fuel i think
The engine is as a result very tired

Its not been sat in the damp - its lived with me in my room on the RC shelfs that i have

Anyway
Abit of a bigger update
the rustler - Well thats mostly completed
The shocks all rebuilt and ready to go :)
Got some firestorm Shocks on the rear now too - with Hpi Purple Rush Evo Springs (legendary!) To make it abit more firm :) Bigger spacing and a much longer spring :)

Still some bits todo - but its ready to roll again now
Still waiting on tyres tho from MS
A few pictures
Posted Image
Posted Image
New Bladders and Shock parts so i can put firestorm on the rustler

Rush evo springs
Posted Image
to TRY and keep the bum from sagging.....

Anyway Onto the Hyper, its been getting most of the work as of recently
So i started with the engine, and well i knew it was tired
It had compression failing, when it got hot it would stall and fail to restart for 10mins
Well this explain all....
Posted Image
Ths piston reachs top of the liner.... with little effort....
that has been corrected as best as i can

Next i had clutch failure when hill climbing, the engine would be revving and there was little or no drive, and saying these are stock shoes on there like 10th gallon
There just ready for replacing
Posted Image

Meshing has been fine, but again age and wear (when the engine has decided to move) has started to show even on the clutchbell
The teeth are pointed - and chunks - esp near mating face.... odd - eitherway it still works, so i'll keep it going for a spot longer
Posted Image
Posted Image

While doing lots of toothbrush and elbow grease work, i notice my fuel was ratteling... well its not the first its happened, the fuel filter thats built is floating around again.... blocking the uptake tube, no surprise
Looking to fit a Hyper 8 Tank as hyper 7 tanks are buggers for breaking....

Anyway with the parts list costs going up quickly i kept moving forward
The Rear diff was seized, it was solid - input cup or wheels turned - never a good sign.....
So i opened it up and well found this....
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

i thought it was all rust in there, thinking great - time for a new rear diff....
Well it turns out it wasn't as such
The Grease had become contaminated due to the bevel gear breaking up, Now its been sat in my room - never moved, so this like it is now has to have happened BEFORE it was last used, so its just sat there
Not to worry after spending some good elbow grease on it - i soon cleaned up - spending ages picking the crown gear free of solid grease that was jamming the diff up

Now the next problem i was finding was bearings, seized bearings everywhere, i must have spend hours free'in some the bearings up, most been sucessful so far, however 1 was seized and i ended up breaking the outer shell - i said stuff it!
Yes Bubbles and Matt N are going to say told you so - just buy new bearings
Well they won - i spent like 3hrs trying to free this 1 bearing to only break it

So thanks to Ebay - £9.50 later a brand new Bearing set for the hyper arrived saturday morning
Posted Image

The car is a general tidy up - i want to look better then she did - rewind the clock a little
Well the standard anodising was wearing off - it was bound too
So here comes me with those blasted rattle cans...

i mean wheelie? lol
Posted Image
Posted Image

Anyway - here are some of the finish parts - i had trouble with it been cold meaning drying took forever, so the results are as i hoped, but it'll do
Posted Image - the finished overview of where im at
And yes - they are the same shock socks that fit onto the Rustler shocks - weird huh how they fit just as nicely?

Anyway some more close ups where you can see my dodgey spraying skills
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

The center diff was also looked at
Nothing wrong with - Just getting ready for new brake pads and replaced the bearings - Still got alot setting up once i've got the whole model back together
Posted Image

Anyway thats all for now - Next is looking at the front Steering setup and diff, and to start replacing parts that are ready

Ziggy

Edit: - The Spektrum also got some TLC
that snapped ariel that had been bodged several times
Well Before
Posted Image

Now

I thought it was going to be a pig todo - turns out im wrong.....
