Speedy Models

Anyone else been to Speedy Models in Preston?

Its always my last ditch resort of a shop and thought I would pop in today as my local shop was closed for some reason.

Went in and he was just finishing serving someone else and then I realised why I never go there.

He asked what I was after, I told him, so he proceded to pick up his iphone and complain to BT about his internet connection. Was stood in his shop while he was on his phone to BT for 15 minutes until he got put on hold, thats when he turned to me and told me "doesn't look like I have one in stock"

I left and even if I was desperate for a part again, I don't think I will ever go back.

He was even arguing over the phone saying "Im trying to run a business here" :xd: :xd: :xd: Maybe talk to your customers who are stood in front of you, jerk!!

Yeah, I went in, and won't bother going again.

I asked to see something out of the box, as the box was facing backwards on the shelf so couldn't see a thing, and his response was "well are you really interested, because it's all sealed up"

I was thinking "it's a piece of ****ing selotape mate :whistling: "

Then I asked about a decent sized rock crawler, and he said he'd show me one, and brought out a truggy from the back of the shop?

Then I enquired about what kind of price range would a 1/8th crawler be, and he went "£500, I can order you one right now" and went over to the laptop and was basically about to order me one before I even know what the hell it was :xd:

Wasn't happy, and won't be going again myself like.

I've been twice, first time like you say he was on the phone arguing with his dad I think which was awkward to say the least. And the second time was to take the driveshaft he sold me back as it was the wrong one :xd: The only reason I went was because we were desperate for a drive shaft. Will never go back again. Always use Base in Blackburn if ever possible. Always helpful.

Wished I'd know this before I ordered a part from him, he sent me the wrong part, no communication after I returned said part for a refund.

And then took a month of paypal negotiations to get my money back.

It makes me wonder how places like this keep going??

We could do with a Shop name and shame/ Review topic on this forum, so that people know about places before they place an order, at least that way these people would soon retire the business.

In principle a review is good but its all opinions so someone who is just really wound up can damn a shop and pementantly tarnish them, wether its the truth or not.

That is true, but if you are disappointed everytime you go then I think it is fair to name and shame them if they continue to disappoint on every occasion. Never heard a good review so far.

I visited there shortly after getting my first car. They recommended Tamiya connectors over bullet connectors for a battery connection.

That tells me a lot.

my brother in law got ripped off by speedy models, sold him a caster sk10 batteries and Ali chassis, payed over the odds for it then when he got to try it out on his first run the esc packed in, he took it back to the shop but they wouldn't fix the problem, The chassis they sold him was for a different model and they wouldnt change it, i bought parts off there website and never received them only to find out a week later that they no longer stock them and still waiting for a refund.

Will be spending my money else where

BEWARE !!

Very poor customer service

I've ordered specific things from Speedy over the last few years - not much - and tbh, I've not had a problem that I can remember.

They're not a regular, but I'm sure I've used them.

It would have stuck in my memory had I had a problem - and doesn't.

Justice done :D

That's a bit out of order mate. He might have owned and ran a bad model shop but its hardly justice. He's lost his lively hood and is jobless.

Can't help but feel like that is actually some kind of justice, considering he sells stuff to people that are wrong, gives the complete wrong advice and just generally seems to rip folk off.

No wonder he can afford a 911, it's all your refunds he hasn't paid back

Don't feel even a tiny bit sorry for the guy.

There isn't enough money in a model shop to buy a 911 to start with. Its more likely he's from a family with money and bought the shop and car with family money. If the shop does enough business to cover costs etc its a 'job' but really its more of a hobby. Which explains the shops dubious attitude - Its more an excuse to play with RC's all day and claim to be working than an actual profit making business.

T'was a joke.

On a more serious note, my LHS owner has just bought a brand new Range Rover (more than an older shape 911) plus he has a track day Renault Clio which he's sunk a lot of cash into and he bought his son a track day Renault Megane.

All that adds up to a lot more than a 911.

But that's getting off topic anyway, good riddance IMO... Never liked him, he had a seriously bad attitude, spoiled petulant child if you ask me.

A successful shop maybe - but we are talking Modelsport, JE, Apex (who now of course own JE) ie big place with strong internet sales etc. Smaller shops like Speedy barely turn a profit at the best of times.

The one and only time I went in I was waiting 20 mins for the guy to stop chatting on the phone to his Mum and actually serve me. In the entire 30 mins I was in the shop 2 other people came in and left without buying and nobody could ring because he was on the phone. So in that time he sold precisely nothing - hardly the way to make money.

I wasn't talking about any of those, I was talking about Lancaster Model and Hobby World... Which is a pretty small family run place.

On a note of the topic though, I was in there for about an hour in total, when I first went in he was serving somebody, who ended up walking out because he went into the back about 8 times and came out with the wrong item, so they walked out.

He then (instead of asking me and my Dad if we where okay, or even saying hello) he sat down and started browsing on eBay!

Even when I went towards the counter to ask about seeing something (mentioned in my first reply to this thread) he didn't even look up from his laptop.

I didn't want to be a bother in case he was actually doing something important, but after 5/10 minutes of standing at the counter he finally got up and asked if I needed any help.

At this point I was already a bit annoyed to be honest, then when he had such an attitude about wanting him to turn a box around and look at an RC I actually went there with the intention of buying (not that exact one but I wanted something new so went for a look and hoped to pick something up)

He then went back to his laptop, I went over again to ask if he could order a particular RC in etc... Which he got back up to speak with me and he made a suggestion, I'd never heard of it before so I was curious, the sheer fact I didn't say no instantly, had him almost run back to his laptop and he had practically ordered it and took the money right out of my pocket before I even had a chance to answer him.

When I'd explained I was in the market for something, he then proceeded to bring an RC out from the back (I was asking about rock crawlers and he brought a truggy out) which he simply dropped my waist height, I know some RCs can take some punishment, but when I asked if it was for sale he told me it was a customers, I forget if it was getting an upgrade or repair, either way, it was hardly handled with care!

At that point I just walked out.

There is a lot of problems being a local independant shop.

Think of it like a pub, No pub does all the Beers on sale in the world they would need a bar a mile long, they have to choose a range they think is good and fair, unless they are owned by a Brewrey in which case you get what they make.

The fact is you choose what pub gives best of all the things you expect, Service, Atmosphere, Choice, and most importantly location.

Model shops are few and far between so you have to go the one which is within reach and if they don't offer what you expect you will not be happy.

I am afraid the days of every town having a good model shop or 2 or 3 are long gone.

If you have one then look after it!!!

last september i rang this fella to see if he could repair my radio controlled boat.. after 1/2 hr discussion i was convinced he could do the repairs i needed.. i took the boat to his shop and he wrote down everything i wanted doing and told me the boat would be finished in 2 weeks... well despite many fone calls during the 3 months he spent repairing my boat it became all to apparent he dint have a clue what he was doing and on many occasions i discovered he was telling porkys about what he had actually done so far and what in reality he hadn't.. so 3 months and 115 quid later i finally got my boat back.. excited as a fat kid in a maccy dees queue i opened what was to say the least a shabby crappy taped up cardboard box in gusto to see my nice shiny fully repaired boat.. oh dear dear me my jaw dropped. the weed guards were bent out of shape, the radio transmitter had a broken switch and the quality of workmanship was like something out of a scrap yard.. i asked this dude to put me an led volt meter set in the back of the boat.. no no no ..he'd only gone and drilled a hole in the back of the boat and run 2 wires thru to a lipo battery meter held on to boat with double sided tape ( looked like a stick on air freshner u glue to the bog cistern) to boot it wasn't even waterproof..wtf! ! electrical components and water require some degree of waterfroofness.. this clearly would go tits up the 1st time it got wet.. the hull was not even sealed all the way round and if i had put this boat straight in the water it would have sunk.. i decided to have this boat looked at by a professional boat builder and to my horror discovered the real quality ( or lack of) workmanship this bellpipe had done to my boat.. one of the repairs i asked him to do was mend the sonar device ... nah.. not a chance the new wire he had supposedly put in wasn't even soldered to the sonar device.. he had also cracked the hull in no less than 2 places and tried to hide the abortion he created by covering it in sealer.. all in all this man is a 1st class merchant banker.. cant wait till our paths cross so i can get my 2 penneth
