Losi mini 8ight race build

Pearce

Recommended Posts

Right there's plenty if threads kicking around on here all ready , but there's bashers and racers

This is my micro build thread

For racing

I will be competing this year in the wrca and brca micro indoors

I have owned a shark up untill now and swore buy it . This has now gone to a new member at my local club

The car was supereb and set up a treat

I have been a proud owner of the mini 8 just over a week

My initial idea was wait till it's out , wait for people's set ups and wait for a go

As I own a 2.0 1/8 nitro i know Losi make a good car , parts are everywere and good priced

So I thought go for it ! Lrp shark bits are impossible to get hold off never or less my boxes of spares they will run dry one day

On first thoughts the buggy was heavy but looked excellent build quality

Standing next to the shark it looked similar in dimensions but the shark was made to just look like a toy ha ha

Mini 8 unboxed

It wasn't long untill I stuck a set of new Yellow pins on her

1204b315.jpg

I then tried the stock nimh battery

Washout, disapointment

Out came the soldering iron and deans and on went my lipos

Booooooom

Result . Now were talking

A few mods to battery tray , a few new hes in chassis and a moved esc and car was wicked

After 2 mins I lost power to front wheels

The Losi factory failed to use loctite to secure the grub nut on drive shaft to the carrier to box

Easy fix though and did the rear the same time

The shocks were next

It was like a trampoline

There was hardly and oil in them

I first opted for 40wt oil all round as I ran this in my shark

Here's a vid to show the difference in fronts done to rear

This night I raced it first time in prep for the wrca

I found it a good car , lots of understeer to be true

Twitchy and a light rear end, this contributed to my understeer

Back at home I changed the rear shocks to 30wt oil

Also at this time I moved the shock positions on tower to inner and bottom to outer

This was front and rear

Also I lowered the car so the shafts were level

After this I dropped the rear slightly lower

I worked the camber to neg 2 on front and neg 3 on rear

They were all over the place out the box

Also I have rpm

Ball caps on order now as these pop off for fun

!!!!!!!

Here's some pics so far

I used my shark goblin shell

Inolab servo

Home made rear kick plate

Next to my shark, swapped shells to

1349fe04.jpg

I'm currently using totally stock electrics other than the inolab servo

I have changed the slipper , ie tightend it 1/8th of a turn

Running + 10% punch

Ohhh and used a bit of fuel tube in front shocks to stop them locking out as the shafts are a bit tight on the front on full compression( drive shafts )

I also stocked up on some spares

2 of everything practically. Ha ha

Here's a vid of us running at our wrca last Sunday

I'm

Not really sure what I'm going to do next

But I can promise you that thus will be one of many set ups

The cars new so don't know what's strong what's week whats good what's bad lol

Any advice is gratefull and any questions I will try my best to answer

I should have added

In

Using rhino 1010 mah 40 c burst lipos

They have nice thick gauge wire

Also using

1300mah 35 c burst storm batts

The rhino are my Batt of choice thou as they are excellent value for money and give really good punch

I also have the stock nimh if any one wants to give me something for it .

I will be trying out my White rally blocks next time at track

I also forgot to mention, I'm experimenting with some weights at rear

Also I just had some awsome graphics emailed back to me for my pit box stickers and shell stickers

They fall online great with my shell

Bit Girly but impact will bd great

What you think ???

Right after a lot of thought and also in readiness for next weeks racing

I've decided To strip the front gear box and fill with standard grease

As these have differentials geard boxes and not seald like the 1/8 set up you cannot use weighted oil

What I will be using is the kit grease from my old rc18

I will take pictures of this in steps

The aim of this is better powering out of corners , and eliminating twitching . It will deliver more power to front when needed and balanced power

Right so all done

And job done fully reassembled and set to plus 5 on throttle gently running back in on stand

After a great day racing today

I came home and made a steel plate to strengthen the front hinge pin holders

I have a set , now minus the front as I gave one to a mate as he killed his I'm 1st heat

As I no longer currently have a spare front untill he gets his I strenghend mine

It's only a temp measure until the alloy ones get released in uk

Here's what I done

The wholes are oversized for play to avoid being to tight that will effect drop and suspension wish bone return and also will weaken the rear plate

72a3e825.jpg

We will see how this goes next week

In regards to the day the diff mid barley helped

Tonight I'm going for 100k Durango shock oil sod it !!!

I've seen it done and works a treat

The wing seems nice

I went for White rally blocks my old favourite but just couldn't get on with them

So returned to my dreamy pins

I will continue to use blocks but just couldn't today, they didn't agree with track in my opinion

I've left the rest if the set up as week before and really started getting used To car

I betterd my average time and fastest lap over last two times using buggy so happy

Also I beat the boy I sold my shark to and come 3rd in the b final

For myself this us extremely well considering its 2nd time out with car realistically

Now used it approx 50 mins max

Will post the new front diff rebuild again in a bit

I think you need a new set of drill bits !! stick em on the Santa list !!!! next time try using a punch and drill nice and slow and on to a block of wood that should help out a bit better then you'd get a nice clean hole and in the centre hope that helps you out. was you on carpet as there looks like a lot of fibre on your dog-bones someone once told me to use wd40 helps stop it from sticking to them never tried it myself but thought id pass it on

Lol , they are new drill bits

It's steel sheet , had night mare drilling it

It's only a temp measue to stop the front plastic hinge pin splitting

It's not seen so not to bothered on cosmetic appearance at moment as I've orderd my alloy ones

The thing is it works so I'm happy ;) but thanks for heads up

Btw , yeah . We run a carpet track of course . Mixed with shiny surface here and there

Also rebuilt the front diff as I said I would

What a messy job, the oil smt lush though

be232950.jpg

It's 100k diff oil. Like glue. Silicone stuff

Front diff feels nice and tight now. Should help

Do they leak as i thought they were not sealed or have you found a way to seal them????

I asked this question

As a mate ran it on his all day long sun Snd the duff was as tight as it was at the end of the day as when he started

There were no probs

My car has been running in the stand last 20 mins at 5% throttle to run if in smoothly

At present no sign of leakages

The oil is thicker than the grease that was in there

Well

Home made hinge pin holder worked great

A fellow Losi racer broke 3 today !

One home made carbon and 2 standard

So I'm

Well happy

Also if just like to add I came 3rd in the. (A) final today

The little weight in the rear really helped

Over next few days I'm going to make the metal holders for the front back and rear front and back holders as these seem to be spot on

Finally got to grips with the car and wins hands down now over the shark

Also the diff oil had it's advantages in corners and powering out

Only one breakage of the day and a lower shock cap thing

Plastic ball cup

2min fix , used a shumy cat sx3 as a temp measure

Will post some vids in a bit

Great looking buggy,im defo thinking of getting one when there back in stock, are they ok for bashing or would they be too weak/small?

They are small

They can take a pounding mind

All the weak points will have upgrades soon

In fairness it's pretty well planted and takes a tunning all ready

Dan, is your front diff still tight with that oil in it?

#Ineedthickoil!

Hi Chris

Nope is the answer

It's still better than the rear , but it's thinned out loads. After a 5 min heat it's like stock.

One of the lads used 50k , another used Losi kit diff grease in a tube and there's are holding up

It's a nightmare job and messy , you def need z syringe

, btw I thought you was running a gt14b? You was next to me at Swansea wrca?

Crossed over to the dark side ? Lol
